It was a gala and well-attended event on a warm summer evening in Salem. The work was stunning: Jenny Kroik's very strong work filled the main gallery, Paula Booth's work under the mezzanine is very well crafted and is laden with symbols that can be "read" in many ways, Barry Shapiro's art class exhibited their work, which is a sincere investigation into "art that saves lives" and offers the viewer insight into youth and symbolic meanings.

It was a work day at Project Space for interns and staff. It was not without hesitation that each person began to paint over M. Boonstra's work; one is not accustomed to "erasing" paintings. But with some conversation the crew began to think of it as creating a new work and as a one-day performance piece.

Lily and Lisa's presentation was informative and insightful regarding their experiences walking from Corvallis to Salem, en route to Portland. Body Habitat Walking is propelled by many curiosities:

What does walking and our feet have to teach us?
What of the commoditization of the natural body walking into a sport-based activity, or a method to lose weight, or a way to raise money for good causes?

Who benefits and who loses when we walk?
The geo-architectural planning implications of a culture that does not walk?
The development of psychosocial personality & belief structures (many fear & class based) that become reinforced in the Mind that does not walk on the planet?
The character of physical weariness & longing of the body that does not walk on its native landscape?

Is walking a way to recover the paradise-cycle of being lost, found, lost, and found again, repetitively throughout a lifetime?
What of the eco-political forces that keeps us dependent on wheels instead of feet?

Can walking weave an awareness of fragility and mortality into our everyday lives?

On Tuesday evening July 27th, 2010, Body Habitat project will present and discuss work from their summer project: Body Habitat Walking project: feet not wheels. Body Habitat collaborators, Lily Gael & Lisa Wells, will be walking into Project Space, 155 Liberty, NE, in downtown Salem, Oregon at 7pm. They’ll be at the end of the 3rd day of their walk that begins in Monmouth, Oregon and will eventually complete in Portland Oregon on Aug. 2nd. The Project Space presentation will end with an invitation for you to make the short walk with them to their motel, The Salem Travel Lodge. See more about their project here.

The Benefit for Birds opening reception was well attended with attendees who are very interested in contributing in some way to the rescue of animals affected by the oil catastrophe in the Gulf on Mexico. Artists, interested viewers, families and their children were there to view and purchase works. Congrats to Barry Shapiro for organizing the benefit and for all of his work to make it a success.

I work in a series of paintings, so many ideas spring to mind that I don't want to put them all in one piece. It is just as easy, and provides more creative outlets for me to do several pieces as a series, rather than just one. I utilize recovered/ recycled papers, often using salvaged pages from National Geographic magazine, treating it with a solvent that dissolves the ink, leaving some text exposed, mingled among ink colors dispersed in random patterns.

Each 3x3 canvas is sealed with my unique faux encaustic media.

This Quadtych represents the creatures and birds of the sea hoping for rescue and salvation from the Gulf Coast oil disaster. Clockwise L-R are:

(1) a seabird circling the sun, escaping the oil, yearning for salvation.
(2) is underwater view of a sea turtle with the sun shining above, with the turtle's outline digitally "solarized" to create a glow.
(3) is a crested seabird soaring above the water, its wingtips nearly touching those of its brothers and sisters.
(4) is a zoom-out of many seabirds randomly flying around circular shapes, now representing the dangers of multiple oil wells threatening the ocean and its inhabitants.

In the process of finishing this piece, I was using the National Geographic pages in another series that I am simultaneously working on (I have to find something to do while waiting for paint to dry). I randomly chose one page out of hundreds that I have on hand, because it had a pattern I thought would work, but I didn't need the other half of that page. The design didn't look like anything I would use so when I turned it over to check the pattern on the reverse side, the following text stood out:

"There is only one joy for us,
And this is all we need,
To wash our faces in the new oil,
Of the drilling rig."

This, I discovered, was a page from an article pertaining to Russian oil drilling, however, I knew the text could not have appeared in my hand by accident, and the words were meant to be part of this piece. So, maybe I should call this a "Five Tych" since the words of the fifth element are a necessary part of the whole.

Salem Art Association's Project Space 2010 second opening reception was simply outstanding. July's Gallery Artist MICHAEL BOONSTRA'S installation is fantistic and will continue through the entire month of July.

Project Space Studio Artists were at the reception in full force with three Studio Artists, Jennifer Gimzewski, Layne Young and Marilyn Krug, displaying their art in the area below the mezzanine.

Studio Artists were also displaying additional art in the Studio Area on the Mezzanine.

Everyone enjoyed the great food provided by Wild Pear plus the tasty beverages! Thank you Salem Art Association.

We are want to thank Randy Flook for bringing his musical talents to the event.

Burnt forests and flooded landscapes have been the subject matter of my drawings in recent years. These are landscapes altered by relatively short-lived events, oftentimes taking place so suddenly that they are difficult to comprehend and absorb. I am interested in what comes next. The blurred memory of what was, and the experience of seeing the landscape adjust to its changed circumstances. Trees begin to grow, roots begin to take hold, pools of floodwater recede and evaporate. The drawings I am working on refer to this kind of landscape, but over time I reorganize it by drawing it to different scales with different materials in different places. --Michael Boonstra

I am motivated to paint by the miracle of colour; its beauty and the emotional hold it has on people. I want to fill the canvas with colours that, when placed next to one another, create an emotional response from the viewer. I want to fill the space with the music of colour and allow the viewer to respond to its song. I try to find the combination of colour, shape and texture that give expression to the spaces between. It is about the space created on the canvas but, more importantly, about the space between the artist and the viewer. My paintings are about reaching across that space and inviting the viewer into my world. Inviting others to see beauty and harmony in my work.--Jennifer Gimzewski

The "performance area" will be filled with a blob-like peninsula, and there is a fair amount of "thickening" to be done. Thickening is the "highly technical term" for going back over the structure and increasing the density, and decreasing the amount of free space in the tunnels and passageways. It really increases the sense of the installation as an imposition, blocking light, sound, and movement, as the structures grow, like a crystal. --Adam Rothstein
